How to Sell a Product Online

How to Sell a Product OnlineHow to Sell a Product Online

Online retailing or eCommerce as it’s more commonly known, is a rewarding business. There are many people who are making substantial incomes by selling products and services online and many others making nothing at all.

Like any other type of business, you need to have a plan in order to get started. You can’t just jump in and hope things work out because many fail before they even get their first eCommerce site off the ground.

An Idea…

How to sell a Product OnlineBut what if you could build an eCommerce site that makes you say, $1,000 per month, (that’s $12,000 a year). I am sure you would say this would be an ok amount for a part time hobby and a pretty good idea.

What if you could build a number of them, an entire website, or a bunch of websites, and turn those into cash flowing assets that continue to pay you thousands of dollars a month for the next 4 to 7 years, or longer?

Why an eCommerce Business?

The internet is killing traditional retailing…

It’s no secret that the internet has radically changed how we shop. These days, you can buy almost anything online with a few clicks of a mouse. Because of this, less and less people go to malls and department stores. That’s obviously is bad news for retailers that depend on foot traffic.

Of course, online shopping didn’t just suddenly sneak up on traditional retailers. It’s been steadily building since the 1990s.

But here’s the thing…

Most traditional retailers have underestimated the power of the internet. They didn’t adapt to it. Now they’re paying the price. Just look at these examples of some of the major retail stock prices that have plummeted over the last three years.

  • Macy’s is down 45%
  • Sears is down 72%
  • J.C Penney is down 25%
  • The Gap is down 42%
  • Urban Outfitters is down 33%

Whereas, Amazon, the world’s biggest online retailer is up 130% since March 2014 and business online, globally is now in the billions of dollars annually.

Would you Like a Piece of this $400 Billion Market?

Estimates are, that during the year 2017 online retail sales will continue to grow to $434.20 Billion Dollars. If you doubt these numbers then take a look at these online retail growth stats:

The Online Shopping Trend

How to Sell a Product Online

As you can see, online shopping activity has increased nearly tenfold since 2000. And Amazon, now the world’s largest retailer, is a big reason why.

Important News About Amazon

Amazon’s has recently announced that its is increasing its focus on ecommerce growth and they exceeded more than $136 Billion in sales in 2016 alone and they are expecting sales to grow into over a half trillion dollars in the next decade. They are investing heavily in the infrastructure and marketing initiatives to keep customers coming back for their every need.

Why should you care?

Because you can participate in this unprecedented growth. A relatively large percentage of Amazon sellers are already generating life-changing money by leveraging the massive marketplace that is ‘Amazon‘, and they benefit from Amazon’s investments in creating happy customers and now so can you by getting involved via an eCommerce business.

Here’s How the eCommerce Business Works

You identify products you want to sell in your online store, (maybe from Amazon). Or you setup a drop ship arrangement and a discount (profit margin) with a supplier.

“Drop ship means that when someone orders, the supplier ships the item directly to your customer. When a sale is made you get the profit margin from the sale”.

You then setup an eCommerce website and promote your selected products by writing a product review or a blog about the specific product you are promoting. If you provide quality content and interesting information, you will build a following for your website and a list of satisfied customers.

Here is an example of how this works out:
Product Sells For $49.95 (Product Cost + Drop ship Fee) $25.35 = Profit of $24.60

Another Way

Of course, if you only want to just source and promote Amazon products you can build a blog site and write product reviews. That way anyone already looking to buy a product from Amazon (a hot Prospect) will read your review before making their final decision. The idea is not to try to sell the reader, but rather give them information that will help them with their decision to buy, or not.How to Sell a Product Online

Build a quality review site and helps enough people and you will soon become an authority on that particular product, attracting even more readers. The more readers you get, the more value Google will allocate to your blog and the higher your search engine ranking will become and the greater your chances are of making sales.

You see people are not searching online to buy things. They are usually searching online for information and if you can provide them with what they need and satisfy them with quality content and information they can trust, then you can build a following of readers who will accept your recommendations and suggestions.

However, building a quality Amazon product review site can be a difficult and time consuming task. That was until now. Now you can learn the insider secret to building quality Amazon product review sites that will draw in readers wanting that final push before buying the product they are interested in.

Done for you Sales Letters

Why You Need These

Why you need to seriously consider these products, is because traditional retailing is changing faster than you can imagine. It’s a perfect time to catch the next retail wave.

For example, Sears is one of America’s oldest companies, opening its first store in 1886, and the company later pioneered the mail-order catalog business. Helping it to become the world’s biggest retailer, at one point, but recently it has laid off thousands of workers and it plans to close 150 (10%) of its stores.

All because they underestimated the power of the internet. They are not alone, here’s a list of major companies planning to close stores;

  • J.C. Penney plans to close 120 (14%) stores in the coming months.
  • Macy’s plans to close 100 of its stores.
  • Payless – 1,000 stores
  • RadioShack – 552 stores
  • The Limited – 250 stores
  • Wet Seal – 171 stores
  • American Apparel – 110 stores
  • Abercrombie & Fitch – 60 stores
  • Guess – 60 stores

And that’s just scratching the surface of the decline of traditional retailing. According to Business Insider, retailers nationwide expect to close more than 3,500 stores in the coming months.

As if that’s not enough, three of the above companies, Payless, RadioShack, and American Apparel, have all filed for bankruptcy in the past year.

In short, online shopping is decimating traditional retailers. Creating a huge opportunity for creating your own eCommerce business.  It is easy to see why many experts are expecting online retail sales to grow by hundreds of Billions in 2018.

Is awesome the way you put it. The increase or ecommerce reminds me about Kodak history. Some years ago, they decided to kill the photo film production and focus on digital photography. In that moment everybody said Kodad was really crazy about it. History gaves the company the reason. It happens the same with Internet and the revolution that the webis doing about the products and services exchange. Thanks for sharing the numbers!

    • Peter

Hello, Manual Pleased you have enjoyed the article and I am happy to provide quality content. I trust you will also enjoy the eBook that is coming your way. 🙂

  • Michelle

Wow, I knew times were changing, but I didn’t realize just how much the internet has revolutionized the shopping industry. But I guess if I just look at my own shopping trends, I would see that I order many products online these days. I love the statistics you provide.

This is really great information for a newbie such as myself, looking to get started selling online. I will definitely look into the products you recommended. Thanks for the valuable information.

    Hi Peter,

Wow, thanks for putting up those statistics! Those numbers just convince me yet again on how the internet business is going to take over the world some day. This is a very informative post and I will definitely check out Jungle Scout some time. Also, I would really like to get a copy of your ‘List Building Success Secrets’ to learn more about your online product selling techniques. Thanks!

Hello, Sharon. You are welcome and the eBook is on its way to you so watch out for it. Thanks for your feedback 🙂

  • Marin

    Really interesting article.

eCommerce is clearly where the most growth is and where opportunities are available.

With the emphasis on eCommerce and a lot of solopreneurs as well as the big players entering the market, do you think there will ever be a saturation point where there is too much competition?

    • Peter

Hello, Martin. Competition is what makes things better, smarter, cheaper, faster. So it it really a bad thing? It’s only Governments and their inner circle friend who don’t like competition! Providing value to your customers is what makes fortunes not rules and regulations. Thanks for your comments. 🙂

  • Joey

I completely agree with you. Very nice post and very informative information. You did a lot of research and that is much appreciated. eCommerce is new way to purchase products. The entire brick and mortar retail sector is struggling to turn profits year after year. Too much overhead and people are mostly shopping online.

    • Peter

Hello, Joey. You are right and that of course is why there is such an opportunity for starting an eCommerce business. Thank you for your comments. 🙂

  • Nico

Wow. First thing i did after read the post was BOOKMARKED it. A nice and clear content for sharing about selling product online, from why to how, A-Z. Indeed the ecommerce is expanding and keep growing every year globally. I don’t see any reason that people are not spending effort on this major trend. Nice sharing and this definately is a good starter post for everyone who wanted to involve in ecommerce. Well done Peter.

    • Peter

Hello, Nico. Thank you for your comments and I am pleased you enjoyed the post. I hope you also enjoy the eBook that’s coming your way. 🙂

  • Rhys

Wow I can see a serious amount of research went into compiling all this information. It’s so interesting to see that even well established physical stores have been losing sales to online stores. Seems almost surreal. I’ve ventured a bit into selling products online a few times but never committed. Might have a go at the WP Online Store Training course as a matter of fact

    • Peter

Hello, Rhys Thank you for your comments and yes I have researched this, as I do for most of my posts. Happy you liked it and pleased you have left a comment. I hope you enjoy the eBook that is coming your way. 🙂

  • W Tucker

I love this site. I once ventured into the eCommerce business and lost a lot of money. I wish I’d known this guy back then.
I think it’s well organized, well presented and has just enough sales language to make it appealing. I think he’s done a good job.

I think there are a few places that he could benefit from having an editor smooth out some of the language. There are a few awkward phrases that could be straightened out pretty easily and then it would sound even more professional

    • Peter

Hello, W Tucker. Thank for your comments. I will go back and have a look at those awkward phrases, sometimes when I write I am thinking of the next sentence and miss out a few words here and there. However I am pleased you liked the post. 🙂

  • Anthony

Whoa, you have a lot of impressive stats. I know macy’s has been struggling for a long time. They also have been closing their doors down. I have a family member that worked for them, they don’t know what to do with themselves over there. They are not prepared. That said, your recommendations certainly provide a solution to the online challenge most companies are struggling with. If you Can’t beat the internet… join it! lol Great information!

    • Peter

Hello, Anthony Thank you for your comments and you are right Macy’s is in a similar position to many of the major retailers and the internet is changing the way the world shops. Look at China which is fast becoming the largest eCommerce market in the world with many people shopping online there and that’s just happened in the last few years with Alibaba becoming a dominate player in that market. I hope you enjoy the eBook that is coming your way. 🙂

  • GetTripleDoubles

    Hey,

Great post! It gives a good understanding of the concept behind online marketing.

Retailers have been fighting the internet for years but are only now starting to adapt. The facts in your article should be a lesson to all companies, that it’s better to collaborate and adapt, rather than trying to fend off every new thing.

    • Peter

Hello, GetTripleDoubles. Appreciate the comments and pleased you liked the site. I have sent you an eBook and I hope you like that also. The future for eCommerce has never been better and now is a great time to start with an online business. Thanks for your feedback 🙂

  • LeslieKLC

I learned so much in your blog which teaches me a detail of the traffic information. I could understand the true and sincere content is required. I will learn more in the future due to following your blog. Please feel free to view my Blog and leave comments. Thanks a lot.

    • Peter

Hello, LeslieKLC. Thank you for your comments and I am pleased you enjoyed my post. You have left a line and a half comment about what you learned from my post and said that sincerity was truth was an important concept and you now want me to visit your blog and leave a comment? How true and sincere are you? I give my readers great information and I give away an eBook in exchange for comments on my blog. That should give you a lesson on how to build a following and get traffic and how to be sincere. Simply using words won’t cut it. 🙂

  • Michael

    Hi Peter,
I have to just agree with everything you say because I can see the affects of companies that just can’t cut it online through their stock prices. Amazon is doing an amazing job monopolizing the e-commerce playing field and just the internet in general. I find myself in retail stores comparing prices on Amazon to decide if it is a deal or not and very rarely do I side with the retail store.

I think you have shared some great information and this is definitely a bandwagon to jump on because it is not going to slow down any time soon. Thank you for writing this up and offering what seems to be some great tools to help! I’ll be looking into them when I am ready to get started.

    • Peter

Hello, Michael Pleased to have helped out and thank you for your comments and thank you for your feedback. Watch ut for the ebook that is coming your way as my thank you for leaving a comment. 🙂

  • Geek Hibrid

This is a very good read. It’s becoming very apparent that traditional retailers are not even making the attempt to adapt to the internet. They are simply doing certain things online as a formality but they aren’t really using a “business model” that helps them at least keep their brands relevant on the internet.

    • Hello, Geek. Thank you for your comments, Yes the internet is certainly changing the way the business world operates. This means of course that the best time to get onboard is now. Thanks for your feedback and I am pleased you have left a comment and I will be sending you an eBook as a thank you 🙂

  • Marley Dawkins

Oh wow this is a great breakdown of how to sell a product online, which is a very difficult topic for some people to grasp. I myself am still on a process of learning how to effectively do this, and your review Peter has and will continue to help me a lot in unlocking my maximum potential within selling products online.

Keep up the awesome work you are doing because it is invaluable to millions around the world!

    Hi Peter,

Most of my friends purchase products online. I’m amazed at the decline of traditional retailing. The power of the internet needs to be taken more seriously.. it will never stop.

I just started my new online business and have my own website. I just set myself up with amazon, com. The software program you talked about.. Jungle Scout and WP Online Store combined sounds like this could help me alot. I’m especially interested in getting estimated monthly sales volume. I look forward to pursuing this further.

Thank you for your helpful information.

    Regards,
    Monica

  • Angela

    Hey Peter,

Very interesting article you have here, it is certainly jammed packed with some great ideas. I like how you mentioned the ways the big box stores are down in their sales. I see it happening not only in my area but across the country. Definitely more people are taking advantage of shopping online. I can certainly see your points of making money online with e-commerce. The biggest issue is sticking with a program and actually treating this as a business that the owner has to be in the time and dedication to get it started and to maintain it.
I will come back and visit again,
    thanks
    Angela

    • Peter

Hello, Angela Thanks for your comments, and yes you are right sticking to the program, as with anything, is highly recommended as all too often people will jump from one idea to the next and wonder why nothing works. Appreciate the feedback thank you 🙂

  • Scott

Thanks, Peter. So if I wanted to create an Ebook with some “Advanced Selling Techniques For Beginners” and sell it on my website for new salespeople, would this program give me all the tools and ability to do so?

If I could set myself up to sell my own product on my website with just a simple 10 step program you can count me in!

    • Peter

Hi, Scott. With a eCommerce store you can sell your own products. You could create a link to a sales page, if you don’t have it available on Amazon yet. Thank you for your question and comments. 🙂

  • Thia

Thanks for sharing. You definitely answered some of my questions here! WordPress is an awesome tool to use and is really so easy! It is actually scary how pretty much anyone can do this nowadays! I sometimes wish I could see into the future and see what things will be like 50 years from now.

    • Peter

Hello, Thia. Looking at how fast the world is changing it will probably be unrecognizable certainly giving the pace that eCommerce is taking from over traditional retailers. Thanks for your comments 🙂

I see that your website is a professional one so I think I will comment a bit only .

So perhaps you can shorten the size of your texts and articles , then maybe people will have a better experience looking through your website .

I think you have done an amazing job , on the other hand you may also want to put in a video page where peope can directly go to without reading all the text on having an online business .

I think you are helping a lot of people . So keep up the good work !

Hello, Alwi I left a comment for you about your site via the email address you provided with you previous comment. I do usually have a video on my posts just not every post. Thanks again for your feedback 🙂

  • Cathy

    Hi Peter,
I am very interested in the How to Create a WordPress eCommerce Site but I could not get the video to work. I have just started a new website about grooming pets and what I have done so far is given the info on the items with an image. I’m using items from Amazone. Will I still be able to incorporate my opinions and give detailed info on these products if it is set up like a store? Or will it be an entirely different page with all the items I want to sell?

    • Peter

Hello, Cathy Thank you for your comments. I’m not sure which video wasn’t working (there are two)I have checked them both and it appears fine, perhaps the internet connection was slow at your end. Anyway I am pleased to answer your questions. The product lets you set up a store that you can totally change and stock with what every Amazon products you select and you can write what every you wish. It’s like a template builder and you change things (within limits of course) and you will find it very convent to use and t will save you a lot of time. Thanks again for your feedback 🙂

  • Sharon

    Hi Peter,
I heard about drop shipping sometime back but didn’t really look into it then. Thanks for sharing good information here.
I have been with WA for few months now. Learning the very basic of affiliate marketing. Still lots to learn.
Hope to be able to create my very own eCommerce site in the near future. Looking at the online retail growth statistics, this should be the direction to go.
Look forward to more good articles from you.
    Cheers,
    Sharon

    • Peter

Hello, Sharon I am happy to help out and I thank you for leaving a comment. eCommerce is certainly the way forward for many looking to start a business in todays world. 🙂

  • Alan Cooper

Wow, Peter. The statistics you present for starting on-line businesses and becoming wealthy are really interesting and make a real case fro starting my on-line business. The trouble is I don’t really know what to sell and if I did know what I wanted to sell how do I know it would be the right thing to sell to make money. The second question is related the $420b that his being sold on the internet. Surely most of this goes to the “big boys” in the market like Amazon leaving very little for the small players like me. Do you agree with this Peter?

    • Peter

Hello, Allen. Thanks for your comments. if you wish to get started online it’s important to get an education first before you think about selling anything. Once you learn how the process works rest assured there is unlimited products and services you can sell. WA is the best place to get the education you need. Thanks again for leaving some feedback 🙂

    Hi Peter
I love the idea of setting up an e-commerce store. Its sounds really exciting.

I want to move away from my ‘brick and mortar’business and start doing something online.

I think for $10, it’s a definite reasonable price for learning to start an online business.I am new to this stuff and will want to learn things at my own pace.

Will give this course a go!

    Thanks for the help

    • Peter

Hello, Roopesh. Thank you for your feedback. I try hard to bring great value and awesome products to my readers so thank for your comments. Let me know if I can help you further at any time. Cheers 🙂

    Fantastic article Peter.

I’m reasonably new to online marketing and I found your site really informative, especially when I decide to start selling my product via amazon etc.

Thanks for the good info Peter. I’ve been looking into a drop shipping/Ecommerce model for quite some time, as I was involved in retail arbitrage in the past. The hardest part for me is finding a supplier. Do you believe my success in retail arb can translate into success with a drop ship model?

    • Peter

Hi Derick. Absolutely! I think success follows success so you should do well. The Jungle Scout software program together with WP Online Store is a great combination if you are thinking of selling Amazon products. Pleased you have enjoyed the information and I thank you for your comments 🙂
