If you’re going to achieve any sort of online success at all, you’ll need to know about SEO and how to make it work for you. The most economical SEO strategy is to do it yourself. But this is much easier said than done because there are many techniques to implement and understand. Understanding SEO for beginners can be a daunting task.

Learn to SEO

You’ve MISLED Me!!

Been Misled

hate to tell you this, but you have probably been misled by many so-called online SEO marketing experts. It seems some have got caught up in touting the latest marketing trends like social media, mobile marketing, retargeting, banner traffic, solo ads, video marketing, etc.

And they have told that you either need to work with an ‘SEO Expert’ or contract out to an ‘SEO Consultant’ who all too often wants to sell you a high priced program that promises you a high google ranking. BUT, do these ‘experts‘ actually have a high ranking on their own sites?

Effective S.E.O. is Still Relevant.

Well, maybe you don’t need them because I’m here to tell you that there is still an effective way to get free, targeted, and sustainable visitors to your website via SEO or Search Engine Optimization. SEO is one of the older methods for gaining traffic, and despite many of the changes within Google, it still can be a huge source of long term traffic for your website even in 2017 and beyond!

If you’re on a budget, then a step-by-step SEO action guide could save you countless hours and a small fortune, by not spending money on consulting fees and other SEO services.

D.I.Y. SEO Tips

Learn to SEO

Here are some initial actions steps you can undertake yourself for free.

1. Make certain your site is clean (no broken links) and hosted by a respectable company.
2. Enhance your keywords
3. Submit to the search engines and directories
4. Deal with your page rank
5. Add more quality content

You can also see Google Webmaster Guidelines which covers the most common forms of deceptive or manipulative behavior that Google may respond to negatively and what you need to avoid doing if you want to rank well.

So here are the steps…

Step 1. Ensure your Site is Tidy

A clean site begins with clean hosting and having a static IP address. Ensure that your website’s loading time is efficient.  Make certain the site loads rapidly and to do a test you can use a free tool, such as Pingdom to test your site’s loading speed.

Learn to SEO

The higher the score indicates that there are no unnecessary graphics. You must likewise test the website with different internet browsers. This will take time but it will ensure visitors to your site will have an enjoyable experience.

Also, check that you have no broken links or links that are not working, so you need to go through your site and check that all your links functioning. It’s also a good idea to make all external links leaving your site ‘NoFollow’ links. (This may be a bit advanced – If you understand it then great,  if not then don’t worry too much about this)

For efficiency and speed, you could use Screaming Frog SEO Spider (Download for free, or purchase a license for additional advanced features)It is a powerful tool that crawls your website in the same way as Google. When it’s done crawling, you’ll get a detailed report including:

  • Broken links and server errors
  • Details of page titles and meta for every URL on your site
  • Duplicate content warnings
  • Pages blocked by robots.txt (or nonindexed)

Step 2. Enhance your keywords or keyword phrases.

When you’ve selected the keywords you are going to use and have done a search with a keyword tool (you can browse the web, there are several that are good) and found out the number of searches for each phrase and then have hopefully you have made your selection based on ‘competition‘ rather than volume.

Then remember to keep your keywords or keyword phrases for each page or post to a minimum of two or three. Use your ‘Main’ Keyword at LEAST once in the content. Write naturally and you will tend to use your target keyword several times within your content without having to think about it.

If it makes sense to include your keyword early, then do so. Otherwise, just include it somewhere on the page.

While there seems to be a small correlation with the keyword appearing near the start of an article, don’t worry about this too much because there are lots of examples where content has ranked without including the “main keyword” within the beginning of the text.

So in short, you don’t have to worry about keyword density as it doesn’t carry much weight anymore. Don’t overuse your keywords as that will detract from rather than add to, your rankings.

Step 3. Send to the online Search Engine.

Important note! Do not utilize automated search engine submission software to send your site to search engines. Google’s terms of service plainly state that this is an infraction. The majority of the search engine will see this as spamming and penalize you for it.  You’ll find that the path to economical SEO, and even professional search engine optimization, provides no short cuts.

There’s no point publishing amazing content on your site if no-one ever finds it. If your content is good then you should have a clearly defined promotion strategy. This could include:

  • Sending it out to your email list
  • Sharing it on your social media channels
  • Reaching out to everyone mentioned in the post
  • Emailing people who have linked to similar content
  • Sharing your post on Reddit
  • Sharing your post on niche communities (i.e. Inbound.org and GrowthHackers for marketing content)
  • Answering questions on Quora and linking to your post

The exact strategy will depend on your niche (and resources), but a good rule of thumb is that you should spend at least as much time promoting your content as you do writing it.

Also, install and display social share buttons on your web pages to make sharing as easy as possible.

Step 4. Work on Improving your Page Rank.

Remember page rank is that critical metric that increases your exposure over that of your competitors when everything else is equal. To increase your page rank you need to have people reading your content and spending time on your site. NOT just visiting and then clicking away. So it not just about a high traffic volume.

“Do everything you can to lower your bounce rate!

Learn to SEO

The lower – the better

Bounce rate is the percentage of searchers that visit a page on your site and then leave (normally by clicking back) without visiting any other pages.

There are two types of bounce rate:

The first is the one you see in Google Analytics, that looks like the one to the right and there are all sorts of reasons why this figure might be high.

For example, your site might offer answers to questions and once someone has that answer, they don’t need to read anything else.

The second type of bounce is the one that’s more important to search rankings. That’s when someone clicks through to your site from a search, then clicks back to the results page and continues to click on other results. This is going to be a big indicator to Google that your page didn’t satisfy the query and that means that over time you’re going to start moving you down the rankings.

Step 5. Add Quality Material to your Website.

As you’re composing material for your site, think about the reader’s experience. If you just include plain text and page after page of content, you’ll end up with something that’s tough for visitors focus on.

Remember no one wants to read all of your content to find out what’s it’s about. You need to make it interesting from the beginning, draw them in, take them on a journey and lead them to your conclusion.

Subheadlines and Images will help break up your content and make it easier to read. They will also help to keep your readers engaged, increasing time on the page, and a reducing the bounce rate. Plus they make your posts look nice and pretty.

Adding an embedded video to your content will also help to keep visitors on the page for longer. And the longer time on the page (the dwell time) helps boost your rankings. Also, you should regularly update old/archive content to keep it fresh, relevant and rank worthy.

In Their Defense

In defense of many of those SEO experts, I can see why they would feel SEO is a thing of the past.

It has become increasingly difficult to rank websites in the search engines due to competition and new search engine algorithm updates.

Page One pulls 42%

However,

the good news is that if you know what you are doing with SEO,  you can  make it work effectively for you and for your online Affiliate Marketing business.

If you can master the latest cutting-edge, SEO strategies it will make getting free, targeted, search engine traffic easy. Getting ranked in Google is what will bring you free targeted, ongoing traffic.

According to Google, having a page one ranking will on average bring you 42% of the traffic going to that specific keyword.

Evidence

Let me show you some evidence of getting a page one ranking using the information I am about to reveal to you.

Look at the two screenshots below; These are all for postings on this very site. (Online Affiliate Wealth.com – as of October 2016)

These show the keyword(s), the URL, the position and then page number and the date;

And just to show you it’s not only a few, here’s the next screenshot that follows showing a total of 21 pages ranking on page ONE of Google.

Learn to SEO

That’s over TWENTY page One Rankings and there are also lots more on, page two, three and four etc but for reasons of space these screenshots will give you the general idea which is I know how to get ranked on Google!

And I’m not a so-called SEO Expert!

So How Do I Achieve This?

There is really no big secret. I just got an education from Wealthy Affiliate and discovered some proven SEO methods that work!jaaxy

I also utilized an awesome keyword research tool called Jaxxy and with this tool it allows me to see the competition for the specific keywords and how well it will rank in Google.

I then select that keyword phrase and write content around the keyword phrase knowing that it will rank well. If I can do this, then so can you, once you have the ‘know-how‘ and access to this awesome keyword research tool.

You can try it out here. Just put in a keyword phrase perhaps one you already have and see how well it ranks; (see below)

To see more about this amazing Keyword Research tool you can access a few other posts I have about it from here; What’s the Best Keyword Tool? and the Best SEO Keyword Tool

Both, will give you more information about Jaxxy, how to use it and what makes it so good. However, what’s even more essential, is finding keywords that have low competition that will get you ranked in Google. Getting ranked in Google is exactly what will bring you complimentary targeted traffic.

Having a page one ranking will bring you more traffic. So it not about going after the highest number of searches for particular keywords BUT finding keywords that will bring traffic and are easier to get a page ONE ranking for.

Peter you are the man, i smiled althrough. You know, many people out there make good use of our intelligene and deprive us of great content. I must say i am happy you broke this down and it is really interesting. Keep up the good work. There are so many people out there searching for this kind of info. I am happy i had the opportunity to be informed. thank u

    • Peter

Hello, Godwin I am pleased you have enjoyed my content and hope you visit my site again. Giving value to my readers is what makes many of my posts rank on page one of Google. Thank you for your comments 🙂

  • isaac

Hi Peter. Great stuffs as usual. I’ve tried using pingdom – thanks for this tips. It seems my site is grade B, still not too bad right?

The quora tips is really good. I’ve joined a few forums and answer questions while linking to my content. I’ll join quora and try to expand my reach while helping people out too.

How to reduce bounce rate? Mine is around 85% and don’t seem to go down.. another thing i with like to ask is the importance of wording our keywords accurately. Let’s say I’m targeting “Vitamix 5200 blender review”. Do i have to use the exact keywords or can i paraphrase it to something like “my review of vitamix 5200 blender”.

Thanks for the great info Peter!

    • Peter

      Hello, Isaac.

Bounce rate is how long people are staying on your page. If that is NOT long, then the bounce rate is high. If they stay for a little while then the bounce rate will be lower. So it’s a measure of the quality of user experience. So creating quality content is important.

The power of a great Keyword research tool can not be understated. According to Jaxxy; “Vitamix 5200 blender reviews” is a better keyword than “Vitamix 5200 blender review” Although “vitamix blender reviews” gets more traffic “vitamix blenders” gets the most traffic. All of these are good quality keywords that will be easy to rank for.

You can discover this yourself my using the free keyword tool I have on my post: http://onlineaffiliatewealth.com/learn-to-seo

Thank you for your comments 🙂

      • Isaac

Hi Peter. Many thanks for the reply. I take note of your suggestion and will create more quality contents that is engaging to make sure visitors stay in my site.

On the keyword, I would like to know if there is any issue if I rephrase it to different sentence. For instance I got the keyword “Vitamix 5200 blender reviews”, it got more searches with low competition and I would like to make it my target keywod. Can I rephrase it to “My review of the Vitamix 5200 blender” just for the sake of making it more natural for my visitors. In your opinion, will this change in the word order affect my SEO?

        Thanks in advance Peter!

        • Hello Isaac. It’s ok to have more than one keyword (or tags) and you could easily be ranked for both. Ulimately Google will rank you on the word(s) it feels is the most appropiate. I try to put the selected key word within the first paragraph but its not alway necessary. On your wordpress post you have the ability to enter the keywords you wish to target, so you can enter the phrases you wish to target there. Writing natuarally is the best way to create content and so it is ok to do what you are suggesting. Good luck going forward 🙂

I really enjoyed this read, it’s good to hear that SEO isn’t dead. I think SEO will always be important. I’m glad you showed evidence of this by showing how you’re ranking for over 20 keywords on page 1. This is encouraging that smaller websites can compete with the larger authority sites by putting out relevant information and being able to relate to our readers.

    • Peter

Hi, Dan Yes that all true and it can be done. Just provide quality and relevant content and choose you key words wisely and you can out rank the best of them. Thank you for your comments 🙂

  • NetworkCEO

Thanks for the great overview of SEO and how to improve my website rankings in the SERPS.

I will be referring to your article often, in the future, as I update and prepare my website for better search engine results.

I will be referring to your 5 Steps for SEO frequently and using it to optimize my sites SEO.

    • Hello, Doug Thank you for your comments and I am happy to have you referring back and I am pleased you have found some useful information on my site. 🙂

  • Ilias

    Hey Peter,
Great article! You answered many of my questions. But I have two more:
When can I expect my first visitors from Google on my new website if I follow all the steps correctly?
In my new website, I already have two sales from social media. Is Seo worth the effort more than social media or not?

    • Peter

Hello, Ilias. Yes SEO is worth it because it’s how to get free long term traffic to your site. Social Media brings in traffic to but you need to work it. Both are great and your should implement as many traffic generating strategies as you can handle. It’s all good.

In terms of expectation of visitors it will depend upon how long it takes you to be indexed by Google and then how much competition their is for the keywords you selected and where you rank in Google. If you did your research well you would have found some low competition keywords and ranked on page one which brings in 42% of the traffic going to Google.

Happy to answer any other questions. Thank you for your comments 🙂

  • Cerulean

  • Queen

Thank you Peter, you did a thorough job explaining SEO, I trust your book on SEO will deliver what it promises.

Just going to buy a copy now.

Peter, about ranking, I have this my website it was doing well in terms of search engine traffic. But recently I can not find it anywhere on google for the keywords it was ranking for before.

Is there anything I did wrongly?

    • Peter

Hello, Queen Probably not you as the rankings can change often, as new people or posts are put up on the website. An idea is to take a look at the websites or posts that are out ranking you and try to discover what they are doing that you are not. Also updating your content, either by adding comments or new information or both is what will make Google happy. They tend to dislike ‘static sites’ that don’t have much engagement or activity. NOT to say that these sites don’t rank but Google likes to see engagement and visitors to a site and the more they see the more likely they will improve your rank.

Thank you for your comments 🙂

I’ve learnt so so much today! I knew there are lots more to learn about SEO. I just didn’t know that it’s really important. I have downloaded Screaming Frog SEO Spider -6.2 and I can’t wait to get starting! I’ve also tested Pingdom. I just don’t know what all those numbers meant but I’ll definitely study them. I’ve bookmarked your page because I will need to re-read them again and study them one by one. I’m expecting to follow each of the steps until I get page 1 ranking in Google! Yeay! As I’ve said earlier, I’ve learnt a lot today from your page. So, thanks for sharing. It’s really helpful.

Very well said. I actually used to work for the largest online marketing firm in the world and I have learned more from WA in less than a month than I have in a year at my old online marketing firm. Not only has WA taught me how to master SEO but in less than a month, my WA hosted website has already captured my first high ticket client! I really enjoyed how you detailed the importance of SEO and the quality content that you have displayed on this site regarding SEO best practices is not just a tease but you have listed enough information here to actually put in practice for positive results. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for this info on Jaxxy keyword search tool. Does it really only work with product review sites? What about human interaction phrases? I’ve used it before and have been ranked on google searches on page 1 and 2, but my keyword phrases were not as natural as I preferred. Why Isn’t jaaxy enough? I am looking forward to your book, “List building success secrets.”

    • Peter

Hello, Busy Girl. Oh Jaxxy is enough, if you know how to utilize it. It is powerful and works for any niche or interest that uses keywords. It gives you the competition for each keyword or keyword phrase and lets you know how well it will rank. You still need to do the research and this post is about other things you can also do the improve your SEO. Thank you for your comments 🙂

Thank you so much for your tips! I am another Wealthy Affiliate user, but I have to say, I still struggle with SEO. You’ve really helped clear up some details. I never know how much, or how little to repeat the keywords. Or how many keywords to focus on in each article. I was always wondering about the All in One SEO plug in, do you have an article going into more detail about that plug in? I know that the plug in adds a lot of extra options at the end of each post, but I am always unsure of how to use those options. Thanks!

I always thought SEO is a thing of the past as Google wised up to it in their latest updates. However, it is not true! Your post is very thought-provoking and I am a massive fan of Jaaxy. It gives me ideas of what keywords to target in my content and actually drives my agenda for my website. Your course looks very interesting and I may purchase it. Do you think Google have wised up to this?

    • Peter

Hello, Gary As I say in my post If you’re going to achieve any sort of online success at all, you’ll need to know about SEO and how to make it work for you. I also say that you have probably been misled by many so-called marketing experts. SEO is one of the older methods for gaining traffic, and despite many of the changes within Google, it still can be a huge source of long term traffic for your website.

I have of 21 pages ranking on page ONE of Google so I know what I am talking about and if you try my course you will have plenty of time to apply the strategies shown in Cutting Edge SEO Mastery Video course so you can see for yourself how well this works and I have made this a brilliant investment at the very low price of only $67 $9.95 So this is an opportunity to learn about SEO and learning how to get ranked on Google.

Thank you for your comments and I hope you enjoy the eBook that I have sent your way 🙂

I feel like too many people these days have gotten the idea in their head that SEO writing is useless now because people seem to think that google has found a way to work around this. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

Other people have another problem, though, they seem to think that SEO writing works in this obnoxious way. I’ve run into this a lot as a freelance writer, where my clients often seem to think that the way to get ranked in google is simply throw in as many keywords as many times as possible. I hate that!

    • Peter

Hi, Jaylin. Yes I agree SEO seems to be a forgotten art these days which is actually great for those of us who actually know how to still do it. I find it a very easy and inexpensive way to get traffic. Thanks for commenting 🙂
